Endeavour (2012)
(As a small aside. Both these men are rather good-looking.)
I rather liked Endeavour. I couldn’t help but compare it to Sherlock and I wonder if it was supposed to be ITV’s counter but if so, it was almost the opposite.
Rather than an update, it went completely the opposite direction, a throwback to when the famed Inspector Morse was a young detective constable. There was no flashy technology, no blood spatter or DNA or phone tracing, just old-fashioned mystery solving.
Morse himself is the antithesis to Sherlock. Seemingly diffident, he seems to have strong moral convictions and is rather emotional. But he is not without his own idiosyncrasies, and there a few moments of humor sprinkled throughout.
Flora Montgomery was wonderful as Rosalind Stromming and John Light played an interesting government clean up man. The mystery played out well, with hints along the way but not utterly obvious. I hope the show gets a full series.
